One of the education news today is that a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, and Jalandhar has successfully created bone implant materials using eggshells. This led to the development of bone substitutes via a cost-effective and non-toxic process.
Researchers formulated this process wherein beta tri-calcium phosphates are electronically produced out of waste eggshells. At present, synthetic chemicals are leveraged as bone substitutes owing to the presence of chemical residues. They discovered the fact that eggshells contained large traces of calcium and a few amounts of water and protein.
Bio-ceramics created out of eggshells have displayed maximum biocompatibility when compared to synthetic powders. It is primarily due to the presence of extra bioactive elemental ions. Apart from being biocompatible, these materials are cost-effective as it is available in abundance. Today, a huge volume of eggshells is discarded in the form of waste around the world.
